There's a lot of good theater going on this weekend, including some fabulous things I don't want to miss. I have a feeling there will be some complicated schedule where I try to do it all! What's a girl to do? Here are some of the highlights:
Just this Weekend:
Phranc at Highways - fabulously butch folksinger celebrating the 20th Anniversary re-release of her major album, Folksinger. Here Be Lesbians.
The New Theatre For Now festival at the Kirk Douglas theater is in its second week, and has some great shows. The performances I'd love to see, given infinte time and money (well, a pass to all shows is only $20, so I guess infinite money isn't necessary) include
- Gaytino by Dan Guerrero at 8pm tonight (Wednesday, March 30, 8pm)
- Merchant on Venice by Shishir Kurup, a reworking of Shakespeare's play set in the South Asian community in LA (Friday, April 1, 8pm)
- LAUSD written and performed by Sandra Tsing Loh, who I LOVE on KPCC. (Saturday, April 2, 5pm)
- With What Ass Does the Cockroach Sit? written and performed by Carmelita Tropicana. This is a must see and I absolutely will be there! I adore Carmelita Tropicana and I saw her perform an exerpt from a piece about Elian Gonzales several years ago. I can't wait!
Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion Saturday night at 7:30 and Sunday afternoon at 2pm. They're doing a program celebrating their 20th Season which includes reviving old works as well as performing new ones. They have student rush tix available 2 hours prior to the performance for $10. Yay!
Drag Nuns in Tinseltown a documentary about the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence in Los Angeles, is showing at 7:30pm on Sunday as a benefit for Highways.
Ongoing:
- Electricidad by Luis Alfaro at the Mark Taper Forum
- Matthew Bourne's Play Without Words at the Ahmanson (opens April 8)
- Saucy Jack and the Space Vixens at the Ark Theatre - campy and fabulous!
Movies! I still want to see Bride and Prejudice, Beauty Shop, and Sin City!
In the Amazon Warehouse Parking Lot

On the one hand, I love seeing any attempt at a science-fiction setting on
stage. On the other, I wish Sarah Mantell's play was better. My review is
here...
